Abercrombie & Fitch switches it's thoughts about "Fat Bitches."

It seems that Abercrombie & Fitch has done an about face and will start to offer plus sized clothing in their stores and catalogs. Vogue Magazine has reported that the snooty retailer has decided to begin to offer plus sized clothing.

This is a direct contradiction of CEO Mike Jeffries often voiced opinion that "that he hates 'fat customers' and only wants 'thin and beautiful people' to shop in his stores." Of course he got a lot of pushback about this opinion and the company is obviously trying to lessen the impact of his idiocy. Or they might think that moving into plus will make them some money. How can we know what is really going on here?

What does "offering plus size clothing" really mean to a mass market retailer like Abercrombie & Fitch? First of all it most likely means that they will offer "extended sizing." That is to say they will extend their current patterns to sizes 14, 16 and 18. I would bet that they will not spend the money to use unique new plus sized pattern for these pieces but instead just increase their regular patterns by a few inches as determined by some computer program. This is a recipe for ill fitting clothing that most plus sized customers have gotten used to from these mass market production houses.

I think they are just playing lip service to the idea of expanding their base into plus sized clothing. You see our market is a whole different world and they have no idea of what they are talking about. They might launch this initiative with a lot of fan fare and publicity but I venture to guess that they will quietly drop it once they realize what is entailed in offering plus sized clothing.

People don't change their firmly held opinions very often. I am sure that Mike Jeffries still feels the same way about plus size consumers and will take the first chance he gets to drop it. Seeing is believing. So lets see what happens.
